Description:

The English Electric Lightning (later the BAC Lightning) was a supersonic British fighter aircraft of the Cold War era, particularly remembered for its great speed and natural metal exterior. The Lightning was used throughout much of its service life by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force. The aircraft was a stunning performer at airshows; it broke the world air-speed record and was the first aircraft capable of supercruise. The Lightning was one of the highest performance planes in formation aerobatics

In 1977 I saw a BAC Lightning turn a Bear around in the Arctic Sea...awesome. Thumbs up to the RAF!

Two greatly different aircraft, actually. The Lightning is made to carry a few missiles high into the stratosphere quickly. Not much range, not a lot of load carrying, just raw speed to quickly defend an island. The Phantom is a multi-mission fighter-bomber that can do interceptions (though not climbing as fast), ground and sea attack, and carries a lot more ordinance much farther to project power over long distances. Both fast, but with different mission goals in mind.

Wonder how this beautiful airplane would've performed next to the F-4 Phantom?

This is one of the finest, most beautiful aircraft ever. Modern fighters might perform better, but none looked as muscle-bound as the Lightning.

No, that was the Lockheed Lightning, a different plane altogether and made in America.

My father was a member of 92 sqdn, the blue diamonds lightning display team. He thinks its the finest aircraft ever to take to the skies (apart from the spitfire ofcourse).
